Although advice is generally unclear on the matter of what would be the best type of hamster cage for your hamster, the fact of the matter is that the rule can be quite simple. The bigger the better. You would not always appreciate this as there are a number of hamster cages that are actually quite small and poke, but perhaps worse still they have limited ventilation and limited ventilation can be harmful even fatal for your little pet. Big hamster cages are by definition more likely to have good ventilation and therefore suffocation does not really present itself as an issue.
The other almost obvious factor about the big hamster cages is that the space for your hamster to roam and play is larger in big hamster cages which is a far more healthy situation for you hamster than small enclosed areas. You have the flexibility in the bigger space to introduce toys and climbing frames and the ubiquitous hamster wheel and you can change these around to keep your pets environment varied and interesting. Big hamster cages are definitely better.
